This below article is meant to be used as my editorial in South Calgary Community News - March 2010
Community
I’m sitting in the lobby on the guest computer at the Dalewood Inn, Port McNeill, BC. (The Scanners publisher has given me my last deadline to review this month’s newspaper and submit an editorial.)
My buddy Greg Kolodziejzyk and I just pedaled from Nanaimo over the last three days on the Inside Passage. We went 24/7 taking 4 hour shifts between pedaling and napping. Greg built this Human Powered Boat in his Garage …. and will take it Solo to Hawaii in July. We were just doing some sea trails to work out any glitches. (Cool project supporting distribution of 3000 free bikes for kids.)
We’ve been off the water for just a few hours, and it was an incredible experience. We saw whales breaching, spy hopping, eagles, countless gulls, auks, seals, huge tidal currents and amazing stars!
Sea Trials - Pedal The Ocean
His simple response, “I love creating community. It’s cool to bring people togeather.”
Luke’s a super fit uber tri-athlete guy - under 30 … creating community. That’s cool.
Within the pages of this month’s South Calgary Community News you can find lots of ways to create and help create our stronger community. Perhaps March is the month you get to the Marda Loop Justice Film Festival Night, join the Wine Appreciation night, attend a civic meeting, give your name to assist with our outdoor rinks, pool, or graffiti program … or way more.
Better yet, perhaps March is the month you decide how you’ll make a bigger effort to know the neighbours on your block. (I need to do this.) I think I might be able to find ways … I could host a ReMax Community Yard Sale (I don’t think so), invite neighbours on a Jane’s Walk (May 1st weekend - organized by The Calgary Foundation as part of its vision of a community with citizens engaged in community building at all levels.)
Be strong … and help make your community strong.

I enjoy racing … and I enjoy giving back to the community.
Recently I contacted my friend Tony Smith of Smith Events. Tony runs University of Calgary Triathlon Club, Canmore Try-A-Triathlon, XTERRA Alberta Off-road Triathlon & Duathlon Festival, Golden Triangle - 3 Day Triathles Tour and 1 Day Epic, and a bunch more endurance events.
I’m going to be sponsoring Tony’s events … whereby each person who signs up for an event will get a water bottle.
In exchange, Tony will give me a link on his website … and place a finishing banner at his events.
My business manager, Sue Styles, helped me create the below copy for Tony’s website.
The principles I have been using successfully in my racing have also become part of my listing and sale approach in real estate.
In training for triathlons or competitions I have a system I follow which includes daily exercise, pushing my limits to become the best, researching other competitors and finally running the race! It takes many hours of preparation before I launch into a race and just as I understand the key components to running a good race I also take great care in researching the best price and the best strategy in marketing your home.
We follow a 18 point Pro-active approach to Listing and selling your home. We competently follow proven systems and marketing. We are convinced that after benefitting from our expertise and care you will confidently recommend us to your friends and family when they have real estate needs– and that is our greatest compliment.
I am available for all your real estate needs anytime, feel free to call or email for any advice or answers to current market value.

Are you earning less than 7% on your RRSP …. or RESP, RRIF, LIF, LRIF, and LIRA?
Did you know you can be just like the bank - and get a higher rate?
You lend an investor, your money at a set rate of return. Your money is secured on safe, secure well selected Real Estate.
Most investors pay between 7 and 15% return on your money – depending on the loan to value.
Most normally pay a nominally 3.5% per year into your self directed RRSP account, and then pay a balloon payment at the end of the term.
It’s super easy to set up. You just have to sign the forms. All the forms can be found at http://olympiatrust.com/plans/index.php. Normally the borrower will meet with you with the completed forms (or fax or email). It will take you 15 minutes to review the forms, sign, and then … start earning 7-10% on your RRSPs!
Here’s the Process:
- Investor/Borrower has Client (you) Register for an Olympia Trust Account, using the PDF form – Registered Plan Application.
- Investor has Client Direct Olympia to Transfer funds from existing RRSP service provider using the PDF form – Transfer Authorization.
- Investor/Borrower draws up the mortgage loan details with selected property using the PDF form – Mortgage Direction Undertaking.
- Investor/Borrower completes the Solicitor’s Certificate of Disclosure & Undertaking regarding Arms-length mortgages as investments in self-directed Registered Plans, using the PDF form Solicitors Certificate.
With the forms complete:
- Investor/Borrower gets the first two forms to account representative at Olympia Trust. There are currently three account representatives in Calgary.
- Investor/Borrower gets the second two forms to chosen lawyer.
Investor/Borrower work is done. Olympia Trust gets to work … and lawyer gets to work.
Investor/Borrower follows up with lawyer and Olympia Trust to ensure everything is okay. If things go smoothly, investor/borrower can expect the cheque within 3 weeks of the client, signing the forms.

Recently … I’ve been considering the spelling of my name. Way to many people think my name is pronounced Byron … but it is pronounced Brian. It’s really screwed up … because it’s spelled Bryon.
I’m not sure why my parents did this to me. I still love ‘em … even though since grade 1 … on the 1st day of school the teacher called me Byron … and all the kids laughed … and called me this until about November. This happens less frequently since high school … but still happens at least every three or four years. (I’m really glad I’m not still in school. That sucked.)
I like my last name … and will work on branding it. Howard is cool. Bryon is alright. I hate Byron. I’m not fancy about Brian.
I love selling Calgary real estate … and want it to be easy for people to recognize me … and find me. I work with ReMax … which is a powerful brand and has 37% of the market share in Calgary. I’m want my personal brand to match ReMax … and will ALWAYS use the ReMax logo along with this brand concept.
Below are some concepts that my good friend Greg Kolodziejzyk came up with.
I told Greg that I wanted to copy Greg Hamre’s logo. (See below the header from The Hamre Team’s website.) I met Greg Hamre and his bro at a ReMax conference in Banff in November. He’s a super cool guy. He and his family sell Real Estate in Ottawa. http://www.weknowottawa.com (I hope he doesn’t mind. I’ll have to remember to ask him.)
I’m leaning towards the logo on the top right corner. If you have any thoughts on this … you could post below - or send me an email.
